New crush: photographer Taryn Simon.
Seen above with Trent Reznor in a photo she was commissioned to take by i-D Magazine. They’re making out because she decided she wanted to make out with Trent Reznor. And that’s the photo they used. Typically, that alone would be crush worthy, but in this case it’s more like an interesting footnote.
Here she is giving a TED talk about a book I’m dying to get my hands on, An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar.
This index examines subjects that, while provocative or controversial, are currently legal. The work responds to a desire to discover unknown territories, to see everything. Simon makes use of the annotated-photograph’s capacity to engage and inform the public. Transforming that which is off-limits or under-the-radar into a visible and intelligible form, she confronts the divide between the privileged access of the few and the limited access of the public.
In an earlier series of works, called The Innocents, Simon focuses her camera on people who were convicted for crimes and then freed via DNA testing. I can’t wait to see what she does next.
Past crushes: Naomi Klein, Neri Oxman, Michelle Obama, Michelle Obama & Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, D’angelo, and girls on bikes.
