Bike boxes are coming to Minneapolis!
This is fantastic! I posted about bike boxes almost a year ago. Already common in bike-friendly cities like Portland, bike boxes are going to be a welcome addition to roads here.
My favorite St. Paul lunch spot, Golden’s Deli, is now delivering by bicycle.
Hennepin Avenue Bike Lane Funeral
Thursday, August 6, 2009
6:00pm - 8:00pm
Gateway Park, Hennepin Avenue at 2nd Street N
RSVP here
“We’re about to say good-bye to the Hennepin Avenue Bike Lanes as we know them. Minneapolis Public Works will be sealcoating the roadway to obliterate the old pavement markings this Friday or Saturday. While temporary pavement markings will delineate the lanes until October, this is the beginning of the end my friends, to those old stalwarts on the Hennepin Avenue pavement.
We’ll start with a eulogy/service at Gateway Park, then we’ll have a slow procession on bicycles down Hennepin Avenue (bring a headlight, please). Afterward, we’ll have a happy/sad/indifferent hour at Mackenzie’s (918 Hennepin). Bring a story or something to say about the bike lanes. You love ‘em, you hate ‘em, or maybe you just want to attend a funeral for an inanimate object. All are welcome.”
More about the ill-fated bike lane here.
Bicycles, Rolling Stops, and the Idaho Stop.
Twin Cities Streets For People reports that Minnesota State Legislature is considering adopting something similar to the Idaho Stop into state law, allowing bicyclists to street stop signs like yield signs. To be honest, this is how I, and almost everybody I know, already treats them and it would be great to see this put into motion.
The video above demonstrates why the Idaho Stop is such a good idea (and does so quite nicely).
And those are the headlights of my black 2001 Saturn SC2 bearing down on you.
— Zach Colman, in an article entitled “Bicyclists need to stay on sidewalk” for his college newspaper, The State News. As expected, the comments are priceless.
“I Bike MPLS” t-shirts and sweatshirts are now available for purchase from Stoker Ace.
This is one of the posters I picked up at Saturday night’s Artcrank event. [photo]
It’s called “Get There Together” and it’s by local graphic designer Aleks Stancevic. It’s a London Underground inspired map of the Twin Cities (printed on a beautiful waterproof paper) that puts all the emphasis on bike routes. Awesome work Aleks.
It also reminded me about Cyclopath, a totally amazing bike route wiki-map for getting around the Twin Cities. It’s basically Google Maps for bikes and totally deserves more attention.
